Vegetable Garden at Home

Nowadays, having a vegetable garden at home has never been easier! Having fresh vegetables or herbs ready to harvest whenever we need them is incredibly rewarding, and everything tastes so much better.

The fact that you have a garden at home helps to change eating habits; we start preparing healthier meals, save on groceries, and can even enhance our well-being and the environment.

On a balcony or even inside the house by a window, you can watch parsley, cilantro, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, arugula, and many other varieties grow. You can cultivate in pots, window boxes, or vertical structures, from the simplest to the most complex, using pre-made structures or recycling bottles. Imagination is the limit.

If you are seriously considering having your own garden, whether in the kitchen or on the balcony, you should keep a few tips in mind:

Choose the location: First and foremost, you need to select the spot your garden will occupy. A window, a shelf, a balcony? It must receive at least 4 hours of sunlight per day, be well-ventilated but not too windy. Light is essential for plants.

Prepare the soil: Choose a good substrate, preferably organic and suitable for what you intend to grow.

Where and what to cultivate: You can choose simple pots, window boxes, or vertical structures. Opt for small herbs or vegetables, such as lettuce, cilantro, or cherry tomatoes. If you’ve never cared for a plant before, basil is an excellent choice. Before adding the substrate, fill the bottom of the pot with clay balls to aid drainage.

When to water: Check with your finger if the soil is moist and only water if it is dry. Keep in mind that overwatering can be just as harmful as not watering at all.

Care to take: If old, dry, or rotten leaves appear, remove them. They are gateways to weakening the plant.
